A bulbous bow is a standard feature of all commercial vessels. As phenomenally offensive to the eye as it is, the bulbous bow does in fact reduce resistance to the ship’s passage through the water, and greatly increases the efficiency of propulsion. The first time I saw one of these (on a ship riding high enough to show it) I nearly fainted with horror at the sight—a ship with a goiter!—but later came to accept it as a necessary evil.
