Not everyone shares this opinion of the bolt gun as deficient for waterfowl. For many years Marlin made their Model 55 "Goose Gun" with the absurdly long 36" barrel and successfully marketed it to waterfowl hunters. God alone knows what the three-foot barrel was supposed to accomplish that couldn't be done by one of a more rational length, but the Model 55 sold pretty well. There's a certain contingent of shotgunners who are firmly fixed in their belief that longer barrels "shoot harder" despite the fact that any shotshell reaches maximum velocity in about 18 inches of barrel and anything beyond that is for looks or balance. Other than that long barrel the Model 55 wasn't bad-looking as bolt action shotguns go. I think it probably died off with the introduction of steel shot and the un-economical changes that would have necessitated. Marlin seems to have partially revived the action in the form of the Model 512, however.
