At the time New York State had a law that a deer being transported had to be in plain view. The State Police would actually stop cars on the Taconic State Parkway during deer season, and look in the trunks to be sure no deer was being concealed there. If carried in a pickup truck the tailgate had to be down so the deer could be seen. I remember driving down the Major Deegan Expressway in New York City and seeing a camper with a dead deer slung across the back, in open view, as the law required. No doubt many urban sophisticates were horrified by the sight.
